This paper will question the validity of the category ‘thematic pesher’, and consequently also the designation of 11QMelch as a specimen of this literary type. To this end, a short survey of some aspects of the pesher genre is necessary. The word pesher is used in multiple ways in Qumran research and it may describe phenomena on different levels. It may be helpful to introduce an elementary distinction between two hierarchical levels
