This paper will question the validity of the category ‘thematic pesher’, and consequently also the designation of 11QMelch as a specimen of this literary type. To this end, a short survey of some aspects of the pesher genre is necessary. The word pesher is used in multiple ways in Qumran research and it may describe phenomena on different levels.
